Unfortunately, despite our great efforts, stress happens, and stress is a big underlying factor in your healthy life and can play a large part in being able to achieve your goals. Even if you usually eat well and exercise, chronic high stress can prevent you from losing weight or even add some on. I can admit that stress has always been my biggest obstacle when it comes to weight management.
Your body responds to all stress the same way. Your brain instructs your cells to release potent hormones. You get a burst of adrenaline, your "fight or flight" feeling, then you get a surge of cortisol, which tells your body to replenish that energy. And we all know the best way to get energy is to eat, but in a stressed state, we lose our control. Cue stress fueled binge eating.👎🏻 AND our body will continue to pump the cortisol into the body for as long as we are in that stressed state.
So how do we curb it? Here are a few simple tips to help relax those cortisol levels and better manage your body.
1: Exercise It Out! Exercise gets your blood circulating faster which helps to shuttle the cortisol to the kidneys so you can flush it out of your system. So if you are feeling stressed, get active, go for a walk/jog, a home workout, the gym, swimming, yoga, anything, but get that blood pumping! 💪🏼
2: Avoid Constant Strict Dieting! Restrictive diets can be taxing on the body and with that, the mind. When your brain is deprived of glucose, its main fuel, the depletion can result in, you guessed it, stress. So feed your body what it needs. Listen to it and feed yourself to fuel yourself. 😊
3: Take Some Time For You! When you feel that stress monster coming around the corner, run to a safe space. Find an activity that helps you to relax and centre yourself. Whether it's yoga, or reading a book, knitting, painting or going for a swim. Find what works for you and DO IT! Take care of yourself! A healthy body starts with a healthy mind. ❤️
